I first saw the KickPort when I was attending a clinic in TO. The rep. gave me a demo, and I was intrigued and impressed enough that I bought one to test on one of my kicks, the 22″ x 26″ Starclassic. I decided to give it a shot because I was having trouble getting these kicks, awesome and impressive as their size is, to sound right–I’ve always played 22″ x 18″ and just got used to tuning for that size, so the extra depth really presented a new challenged for me. Also, the shells are maple, which is also something to contend with when you’re used to birch. Well, I bought one, had Cory at Just Drums install it (I hate cutting into my own reso heads with any sharp object), and immediately noticed a huge difference, so I bought a second one for the second kick and haven’t looked back.
Here’s a video from KickPort explaining the product:
On the Swingstars with the 22″ x 18″ kicks, I haven’t switched over to the KickPorts yet–I’m still using the Evans EMAD, which are already ported. Time will tell whether I switch over these too.
